Part One: A Letter to All Our Teachers  

Dear  friends,
 I hope this letter finds you all well.
 At the beginning, our International Office would like to extend you our sincere thanks for the opportunity to work together at Shandong Technology and Business University. We also want to say thanks to you for all the kindness and effort you put into teaching our students here.

International faculty members are an important part of university’s internationalization. For the past decades, international faculty members have contributed a lot to the education of students and the promotion of communication with different countries.  

International Office will spare no efforts assisting you in your teaching and life here. We have a special committee which is organized to deal with some issues from teachers. We will try to make reasonable and fair decisions, which is to help teachers work and live in our university safely and happily.

Part Two:  

A Brief Introduction to the University  

Shandong Technology and Business University (shorted for SDTBU) was originally named China Coal Economic College, and it was the only finance and economics university of the former Ministry of Coal Industry. STBU is located in Laishan District, adjacent to the Yantai Municipal Government building. The University has two campuses. Facing the sea and against the green mountains, its lovely surroundings and agreeable climate has gained it the high honour of being known as the “Garden and Intellectual Campus”.  STBU has an area of 909,000 square metres, with 565,000 square metres of facilities, and a library containing 2,444,300 volumes. The University has 17 colleges, 5 research institutes, and 40 new pattern think tanks and research centres.  

STBU now has 1,187 staff, including 798 full-time teachers, 111 professors, 259 deputy professors, and 323 doctorate degree holders. There are 5 experts who enjoy State Council special pensions, 6 teachers obtaining the titles of “National Excellent Teachers”.  There are 6 teachers who have been awarded “Young and Middle-aged Provincial Ranking Experts for Outstanding Contribution”, and 2 teachers are “Ministry of Education New Century Excellent Talents”.  More than 20 teachers also won titles like “Well-known Teachers in Shandong Province”, “Top Ten Excellent  University Teachers in Shandong Province”, and “Excellent  Instructors for Master Degree Students in Shandong Province”. There are about 22,000 full-time undergraduate and graduate students .  

STBU has Doctorate Degree Cultivation Construction University status. This university’s focus is economics and management as well as in 6 other disciplines including science, art and law. Management and Economics are the two subjects listed in “The Top 100 University Disciplines in China”. Currently there are 7 key subjects on the provincial level, 57 undergraduate subjects, 5 first-level discipline for master’s degree programs and 4 professional academic degree authorization units.  

Complying with the university motto “Seeking Equality and Accuracy; Pursuing Knowledge and Benevolence”, STBU tries to build a new path by sticking to the new development concept, the core strategy of improving quality, the focus of characterized cohesion, the breakthrough of being open and seeking cooperation, and  the  connotative development driven by reform and innovation. STBU has been fully implementing the strategy of “Supported  by the Construction of High  Quality, Prospered by the Cultivation of Unique Characteristics, Strengthened by the Development of Disciplines, Recognized by the Education of Excellent Graduates” and actively striving for the development of a high level open university of finance and economics with its own characteristics .  

   

    

    

    

Part Three: Visa Application :  

1.Before Coming to STBU  

—If you are going to teach in STBU, you need to apply for a Z visa (work visa in China) and here below are the documents you need to send us by email at least two months before you leave for China:  

—Personal CV -education history should begin from high school to the currenthighest level; working experience from your first formal contracted job to the current one or latest one;

—Copy of your valid passport photo page- including your accompanying family members, the expiry date should be more than 6 months after your date of entry into China.  

—Copy of your highest Degree Diplomas- notarized by the Chinese embassy or consulate responsible for to the country/region where the diploma was conferred  

—At least one formal recommendation letter  

—Physical Exam-required for the work permit application  

—A photo -digital, passport picture size  

—Please also tell us at which Chinese Embassy or Consulate you would like to apply for your visa  

—Latest Police Background Check-notarized by our Chinese Embassy or Consulate  

We will apply for a Notification Letter of Foreigner’s Work Permit in the People’s Republic of China and then email the document to you with which you can go to Chinese Embassy or Consulate to apply for your Z visa. You must go to the Chinese Embassy or Consulate that you have confirmed before your Z visa application.  

Note: When you come to China, you need to bring all the original documents for your Z visa application.  

2.After Arriving in China  

—24 hour Accommodation Registration -International Office will help go to police station to register for you with your passport;  

—Health Insurance-As soon as you come to China, we will help you buy health insurance as required by university and China law;  

—Physical Exam-This Physical Test will be done in Disease Control and Prevention Centre and three ID pictures for this procedure.  

—Work Permit Card-You will submit your passport during this process.  This will take about two weeks.  

—Hand in your Health Certificate and the all the notarized original documents  

—The Z visa needs to be transferred into Residential Permit within 30 days.  The International Office will assist with this process.  

—After your Residential Permit is granted, our Municipal Exit & Entry Administration Bureau will keep your passport for about 7 days ;  

—It is about 400 RMB for one year Residential Permit with multiple entries. International Office will not pay for family members.  

—SIM Card-In China, there are two mobile companies, China Mobile and China Unicom. In order to open mobile service, teachers need to go to either of the mobile companies in person with passport to open the necessary services.  

—Bank Account-In order to open a bank account, teachers need to bring your their passport and mobile phone with Chinese SIM card.  

—Wi-Fi- International Office will provide teachers with a campus Wi-Fi username and password.  

    

Part Four: Duties and Responsibilities of Foreign Teachers  

Some Regulations for Foreign Teachers of STBU:

—Need to submit a teaching plan to their Department Vice-dean at beginning of each semester  

— Be prepared and on time for all the classes.  

— Notify vice-dean of sick leave in advance of classes.  

— Turn in final marks on time with all necessary information clearly labelled, (class, course names etc.) on the grades and please keep your grading records in caseproblems arise later.  

— Get teaching schedule and teaching books from vice-dean or the department’s appointed contact teacher.  

— Report any classroom discipline problems or any other students concerns to the vice-dean or contact teachers.
—Don't be late for or  leave early from for you classes. You should save your class monitors’ phone numbers on your cell phones or the teacher's phone number who assists you in each department.

—Teachers must follow the university’s teaching schedule.  Each semester has 16 weeks of class.  You are to finish your class on the last week. Teachers may not rearrange classes unless approved by the department.  

—Any questions about teaching should be brought up with your contact teacher in your department.  

    

Part Five :Obligations to Be Met by Teachers  

—Teachers are required to fully observe Chinese Law, regulations and professional code of ethics in teaching.  

—Teachers are required to adhere to Chinese educational guidelines and established curricula,  to carry out the terms of their teaching contract and complete the teaching tasks involved, whether verbal or written, unless the duties required include behaviour which violates laws or the code of ethics, or both.  

—Teachers are not permitted to promote any matter contravening the Chinese constitution, law or foreign policy.  

—Teachers may not discriminate against any person on grounds of race, colour, culture, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation or disability.  

—Teachers must respect the culture and dignity of each and every individual, including exercising courtesy and restraint in the event of any conflict, and encouraging the all-round development of the students.  

—Teachers are required to make all reasonable efforts to oppose incompetent, illegal or unethical behaviour and report any behaviour to the authorities.  

—Teachers must demonstrate concern for and appreciation of the heritage, values and principles of the employing agency.  

—Teachers must obtain the consent of STBU before posting printings such as notices, advertising, and/or distributing publicity materials, Those that are approved should be put up on display only at the designated location. It is subject to approval of the government to publish external publications.  

—Teachers should pay attention to their behaviours during class. Do not give any speech before Chinese students containing the content of being against, attacking or harming other countries or the feelings of the people of other countries.

—The foreign teachers should protect the equipment that the school provides, and pay attention to water saving, energy saving and fire prevention, and operate all the equipment according to the operation manual.

    

Part Six :Religion and Religious Life in China    

—The Chinese government has always respected and safeguarded foreigners’ freedom of religious belief in China according to laws. Respect for and protection of freedom of religious belief is a basic policy of the Chinese government.

—China implements the policy of religious freedom, and STBU respects for foreign  

teachers’ personal and national customs and religious beliefs; nevertheless, all the  

foreign teachers are forbidden to carry out religious missionary work in China and engage in activities incompatible with their position. Without the approval of the relevant departments of the China's government, the foreign teachers shall not set up an inter-school or trans-regional organizations.  

—The introduction of China’s reform and opening policies has been accompanied by comprehensive implementation of the policy of freedom of religious belief. In 1994, the State Council promulgated the provisions on the Administration of the Religious Activities of Foreign Teachers of the People’s Republic of China, in which stipulates , “The People’s Republic of China respects the freedom of religious belief of foreign teachers within the territory of China, and protects the rights or foreign teachers and Chinese religious circles to maintain friendly contacts and engage in cultural and academic exchanges.”  

—The customs office allows foreign teachers to bring in a certain amount of religious material for personal use. Foreign teachers in China are not allowed to use the Bible or other religious scriptures as teaching materials for students.  

—Religious services are held in churches in China and foreigners are welcome to attend. Chinese churches are independent and not subject to the control of external religious organizations. Foreigners in China are not permitted to distribute religious books or articles, to proselytize, or to organize underground religious groups.  

—Hong Kong’s religious affairs are managed by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government in accordance with the Basic Law free from central government intervention .Religious organizations in the HKSAR and other parts of China should abide by the principle of “no subordination, no interference ,and mutual respect” in conducting exchanges with each other.  

    

Part Seven: On-Campus Service  

On the campus, there are grocery stores, Chinese bookstore (sells a few English books and English newspapers), shoe repair, sewing service, telephones, and photo shop.  

Medical:    

—STBU has its own school hospital .The hospital is mainly for patients who are not   seriously ill. If someone is seriously sick, we have two hospitals recommended in the downtown: one is called Yantaishan Hospital, which is about a 25- minute drive from here; the other is called Yuhuangding Hospital, which is about 40 minutes from here. If anyone wants to go to hospital, a teacher can be appointed to go with you as a guide and translator.  

—If anyone goes to the hospital, invoices should be asked from the hospital so that the insurance company can reimburse later.  

Security:  

Health and safety tips:  

—It is not a good choice to be out alone after 10 pm.  

—It is not a good idea to eat street vendors’ food.  

—While going shopping, put your wallet and cell phone in your inside pocket.

Part Eight :Accommodations    

In order to provide a safe, clean and comfortable environment for all teachers, here are some regulations about our apartments.

—Please be careful with the electricity. Remember to turn off the air-conditioners or any other electric devices when you leave your apartment no matter how short or long you think you will be away from your apartment.

—The university provides a refrigerator, air-conditioner, washing machine, hot water in the bathroom, stove, TV, and some other facilities for your apartment. Please take good care of the facilities we offer, and don’t lend them to others or throw them away.

—You cannot accommodate any students in your apartment.  

—For each month, you are reimbursed 200 Yuan for electricity. If you use more than this, you are responsible for payment.
—If you listen to music, you should not keep your door open and you should not turn the music too loud. Please do not disturb others.

—If you come back home late, you can ring the bell next to the door to be let in.    

—Keep the corridor clean. Don’t leave anything in the corridor. Throw your garbage into the green bins either in front of or behind the building.  

—If you have a visitor, don't forget to tell them to register.
—No pets are allowed.  

—No smoking is allowed.

    

Part Nine: Transportation  

— Taxis: It costs 8yuan RMB to travel no more than three kilometres.

— Buses: Cost 1 RMB

Bus No. 5: You can get to Yuhuangding Hospital, Zhenhua Shopping Center, ZhenHua Mall, Sanzhan Market, and Long-distance Bus Station.  

Bus.No.52: You can get to Bank of China, Parkson (mall and outdoors food vendors, KFC and Pizza Hut), Zhenhua Department Store, Yuhuangding Hospital and Yantai Museum  

Bus No.50: You can get to the Long-distance Bus Station, Three Stations Shopping Malls and Main Beach  

Bus.No.17: It mainly runs along the seaside route and the bus terminates at the Railway Station.    

—Flights: The airport in Yantai is called Penglai International Airport. It will take about one hour from the airport to our university. If you take a taxi, it is about 200 yuan.  

—Speed Train: You can take a speed train to Beijing or Shanghai, which will take about 5-6 hours.  

    

Part Ten: Tipsfor Travellingin China

Yes  

—Can bring personal Bible  

—Contact your embassy or consulate in China for any legal issues. (embassy in Beijing)(consulate in Shanghai,Hong Kong and Guangzhou)  

—Passport needs to be valid for six months after travel visa expires.  

—Buy proper travel insurance and travel cancellation insurance in home country.  

—Bring comfortable walking shoes.  

—Buy a travel guide book in advance.  

—Make copies of passport and other important documents. (e.g. credit cards)  

—Can use major credit cards for cash if you have a pin number (American Express, Visa, Master Card)(check maximum allowed per day in Chinese ATM machine)

—In China Travel during “Golden Weeks” will be very crowded.    

Chinese holidays: a) Chinese New Year  (usually Feb.)  b) National Day(first week in Oct.)  c) International Labour ’s Day.

—Don’t talk politics or religion.

Health and Medical  

—Prescription drugs must only be carried in drugstore containers. Also, bring a copy of the prescription.  

—Beware of special “hot pot” Chinese dishes (can be extremely spicy)(can request little or no spice)  

—Vaccinations-strongly suggest diphtheria and tetanus as well as hepatitis A and B.*Consult with family physician.  

—Medical Kit-aspirin or Tylenol, antihistamines, Band-Aids, peroxide, Imodium and small supply of antibiotics.  

—Be reluctant to eat street stand cooked food.  

—Carry some toilet paper for public washrooms.

Safety  

—Carry money belt inside clothing,  

—Hotels will usually have small safe in room or at front desk..  

—Don’t wear expensive jewellery.  

—Cameras and cell phone should be carried in inside zippered pocket.  

—Be aware and very cautious about pickpocket thieves.

—Always be aware and cautious.

Helpful Information  

—Alipay and Wechat Pay are accepted almost everywhere  

—Carry small amounts of cash.

—Tea most popular drink.  

—Good beer and wine available.(Yantai or Tsingtao)(Changyu)  

—Negotiating the price of items is expected in open markets.

—Bring a small flashlight, sunscreen, and ear plugs, sleep mask and Duracell batteries.  

—Laundry service in most hotels.  

—Get business card from hotel to give to taxi driver to return to your hotel.(if you go somewhere on your own)

Facts  

—Electricity 220V (bring adapter if necessary)

—Language barriers can be factor in many areas. (Good to have small Chinese phrase book)  

—Check-out time in hotel is usually noon (can request non-smoking room)  

— Tipping not expected, some hotel/restaurants have automatic 10%service charge.  

—Weather –warmest areas in south,Macao,Hong Kong,Yunan,Hainan.Bring umbrella. (Heaviest rain in April. May)  

—Most cities have KFC/Pizza Hut/McDonald’s, etc.  

— Metric system of measurement,  

— Good idea to use hotel and good restaurant washroom facilities..  

— Except for major cities, most locals tend to eat dinner between5-7p.m  

— Swimming Pools, sauna and clubs found in good hotels  

— There is usually an extra fee if you use a credit card.
